The Romance of Getting Dressed

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the quiet poetry of getting dressed.

Not in the sense of trends or seasons, but in the way certain pieces begin to feel like companions — garments that gather memories, moods, and moments over time. I’ve learned that dressing well, for me, has far less to do with having more, and everything to do with choosing with intention.

My wardrobe has slowly become a collection of stories rather than staples.

Curiosity guides me. I find myself drawn to pieces that feel alive — thoughtfully made, carefully crafted, full of detail: tassels, embroidery, lace, fringe, and prints that spark a memory or mood. What excites me are not “must-haves,” but pieces with presence — a sleeve that drapes just so, a fabric that is thoughtfully designed, a coat that makes ordinary errands feel like a scene from a film. I especially love when pieces can be worn differently over different seasons, carrying you seamlessly from winter mornings to summer evenings.

The truth is, most of the time I’m either in athletic wear at home or dressed up when I go out — there’s little in between. In a lot of ways, I would rather splurge on statement pieces than on staples. That said, over the years I have invested in a few timeless basics that I wear endlessly: classic handbags, good denim, and quality footwear. But beyond that, I invest in pieces that feel different, pieces that feel like a piece of art and will remain in my wardrobe long after they’re worn.

When I consider whether something belongs in my closet, I don’t ask if it’s “on trend.”
I instead ask:

Does this feel like me, or who I am becoming?
Can I imagine wearing this for years to come?
Does it move with my life?
Will this piece age beautifully?

I’ve found that when I’m intentional about what I keep, each piece has space to shine. Getting dressed becomes becomes easier to choose thoughtfully, rather than getting dressed in a rush.

There is a certain romance in repetition:
wearing the same sweater on cold mornings, the same coat through different winters, the same dress to new dinners with familiar faces.

To dress this way is not about minimalism, nor excess — it is about meaningful accumulation.

A wardrobe, like a home, becomes most beautiful when it reflects a life well-lived rather than a life well-curated.

And perhaps that is the art of dressing slowly: choosing pieces that don’t merely adorn you — but walk with you. What pieces in your wardrobe carry stories, memories, and quiet joy?
