After bleaching my hair every five weeks for the last 18 years, keeping my blonde looking healthy is always on my mind. Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple rules that make a big difference—from maintaining hydration to avoiding breakage. Whether you’re a natural blonde, a sun-kissed balayage lover, or a platinum enthusiast like me, these tips might help you keep your color bright, shiny, and strong.

1. Wash Your Hair Sparingly & Use a Gentle Shampoo
I only wash my hair once a week, and I’ve found that switching to a more natural shampoo and conditioner has made a huge difference. I’ve been using the Wellbel Detox + Restore Duo lately—it’s colour-safe, keeps my scalp balanced, removes buildup, and hydrates my hair without weighing it down.
Tip: Focus shampoo on your scalp, and let the suds naturally clean the lengths to prevent dryness.
2. Never Skip a Hair Mask
Blonde hair tends to get dry and brittle, so I always make time for a weekly hair mask. I like to leave it on for at least 10–15 minutes while I shower or get ready, then rinse thoroughly and wash. This step keeps my hair soft, hydrated, and easier to style.

3. Air Dry Whenever Possible
Heat styling is one of the biggest culprits of damage for bleached hair. I try to air dry as much as possible and only use heat when styling. When I do, I always protect my ends with a heat protectant/ oi.
Even something as simple as pinning your hair in a loose French roll while it dries can reduce breakage and leave hair looking smooth.
4. Limit Heat Styling
Flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can wreak havoc on bleached hair. When styling, I keep heat to a minimum and always work in small sections with a heat protectant.
If you’re in a hurry, I’ve also found that simple styles like braids or buns can add texture without the need for hot tools.
5. Tame Flyaways with a Hair Paste
Even healthy hair can have stubborn flyaways or breakage. I love using a tiny dab of hair paste to smooth edges and add subtle texture without weighing the hair down. It’s perfect for finishing or keeping shorter layers in place.
6. Regular Trims Keep Ends Fresh
Lastly, I schedule trims regularly. Keeping ends healthy is the easiest way to prevent breakage and maintain the integrity of blonde hair. Even just a small trim every 6–8 weeks can make a noticeable difference in overall hair health.

Lastly, my colourist also adds **Olaplex Nº.1 Bond Multiplier to the bleach mixture during my appointments. This professional treatment is designed to be mixed directly into colour or lightener to help protect the hair while it’s processing. Bleaching can weaken the internal bonds of the hair, so products like this help support and rebuild those bonds during the lightening process. In simple terms, it helps keep the hair stronger and reduces breakage while lifting the colour. It’s a small step during the coloring process, but it makes a noticeable difference in maintaining the strength and integrity of my hair over time
